Terminology
All states use naming conventions to assign meaning to the various components of their standards. Often, states assign different meanings to the very same terms. There is no one term that imparts the same meaning in every state and with Academic Benchmarks there doesn't have to be.

Example: One state may define the term "benchmark" to mean a detailed milestone of achievement, while another state considers the same term to mean simply a "grade band."

We do not force the standards into a one-size-fits-all set of terms. We deliver to you the exact terms that are familiar to the state educators who use your products.

Numbering
Using numbering conventions to identify each standard uniquely is a common practice among states. Many educators are accustomed to finding a particular standard by its unique number.

Example: The number "MA.K.1.2" might imply the second objective of the first standard in Kindergarten Math.

Academic Benchmarks preserves the state's numbering system and isolates it from the text of the standards, for easy indexing and for special treatment in the user interface of your products.

Some states do not provide a rigid numbering system, or perhaps don't number all of their standards. Academic Benchmarks delivers a consistent numbering scheme for such standards adding tremendous value to your product by providing a consistent and easy way for your users to search their own standards.

Hierarchy
Like terminology and numbering, the organizational structure used by some states is both unique and important to that state.

Example: Some states bundle Math, Science and Technology standards together, while other states separate these subjects. Similarly, some states separate Reading and Writing standards from Language Arts, while others bundle them together.
